Saying the things he said — under the guise of patriotism, or freedom, or whatever illogic he chooses to use — has to eat at a man. I have to believe that; the alternative is too awful to stomach. I have to believe that after Howe sobered up, he must have thought, if only for a moment, What have I done? He must have felt whatever passes for regret in him, the prickles of sweat growing on his forehead. He must have felt as though he had butted out a cigarette on his own soul.

Definitely worth reading the rest here

  1. Our standard of living is declining, people are loosing jobs, and people are scared. When people are scared, they start looking for scapegoats to blame.

  2. I’ve often thought that very thing about people in many situations. From when someone treats us or friends badly in the lifestyle, to people I’ve seen in almost every walk of my life, business and pleasure. Sometimes you wonder if they were born without self awareness. In any case, I often just listen to people speak and sigh, saying “really? you believe that?”

    Oh well…
