Best Sex Toys: Vibrators

Last week I was asked for recommendations for the best sex toys in various categories. After mulling it over (and taking a hard look at my toolbox of lurve over the weekend), I’m ready to share some thoughts on the very best vibrators available today:

————

Budget-Friendly: Blueberry Buzz. This vibe is remarkably reliable. I’ve had mine for over two years, during which time it’s gotten a lot of hard (heh, hard) use. It’s still going strong, and when I say strong I mean that it’s the most powerful battery-operated vibe I’ve tried. It’s waterproof, so use it in the shower or cover it completely in lube if that’s your thing. At only $20 you cannot go wrong with Blueberry Buzz. I’d recommend this as a first vibe, travel vibe or back-up vibe for anyone.

————

Splurge: Gigi. You really cannot go wrong with this vibe. The shape is awesome for clit, g-spot or anywhere else you’d like to put it. Rechargeability means you’ll never have to buy a battery. And the range of intensity is broad enough to take you from warm-up to screaming. Just about anything from Lelo is a safe bet but I’m particularly fond of Gigi because of its shape. Buy this one for years of great orgasms.

————

For Couples: We-Vibe. This vibe’s pricey but worth it for couples who want both clit and g-spot stimulation during intercourse. If the penetrating partner is has a bio-penis, it’ll feel pretty good for him too. I like the We-Vibe as an alternative to vibrating cock-rings because it’s rechargeable (Lelo now makes a rechargeable cock-ring as well) and it hits two spots at once. I found it to be surprisingly stable during the kind of enthusiastic sex I get to have, and it’s perfectly functional for solo fun too.

————

Weapons-Grade: Hitachi Magic Wand. I’ve written about this vibe repeatedly and for good reason: It fucken rocks. You’d be hard-pressed to beat the power of the Hitachi, and quite frankly I’d be a little worried about you if you needed more power than what this can dish out. If you have trouble orgasming or want fast multiple orgasms, choose this. Plug it in. Use it. Tuck it under your bed, still plugged in. You’ll never want to unplug it.

————

AVOID:  The Cone. It is a crying shame that this ridiculous piece of plastic has gotten so much more press than vibes that are half the price and twice as effective. The Cone did nothing but annoy me. Weak vibrations, crappy design and a nonsensical control panel make this one to leave on the shelf. I know it’s a cone and cones are cool and unique and all, but there’s a reason that no other vibes are shaped like this. Cones and vaginas just don’t mix. Buy it only if you want a pretty pink doorstop.

I own both the Blueberry Buzz & Gigi. No question the first has strong vibrations, but Gigi is far and away my favorite vibe; I couldn’t agree with you more on that. I just wish I could justify a second one so I could get one in the pretty teal color they just started offering.

  • Curious about your, or your readers, experience and impressions with the rock chick.

    Thanks

I’d love to buy the we-vibe but I am totally afraid that it just wouldn’t fit or wouldn’t be strong enough. It’s just too pricey to bet on for me.

(The people I know who liked the cone were women who were used to rubbing on things to masturbate. They felt like someone actually designed something for them. Personally, I doubt it would do much for me, but I can see how it would work for people who were used to humping things.)

    Discreet Pleasure Vibe

This vibe is one of my favorite and it’s well within a college student’s budget. It’s cheap, and it definitely looks it, it’s louder than the others I have, but I put a pillow on top of my blankets and I can barely hear it. Probably sounds like crap from my description, but despite all appearances, this little sucker packs a mean punch and gives me ridiculously powerful gasping for breath type orgasms, I’m not sure if it’s the intensity of the vibrations or the little ridgy things, but damn do I love that vibe, it hardly ever makes it back into my sexy toy box because it goes straight from my bedside table to next to the sink and then back the next night. I’ve had it for nearly a year now and it has yet to give up on me. I’m not so much a fan of a&e toys, but it seems the only place you can buy this online.

  • A Cone was purchased for me, and while I heard great things about it, I completely concur with your assesment. It’s far too hard to get off with that thing. It became a mission. I finally did it, and haven’t touched it since.

I agree…*love* the Gigi, love Lelo toys in general. Well designed for both outer and inner stimulation, rechargable (and they last a long, long time with each charge).

I splurged on the We vibe, but don’t use it…I think I just don’t know how to put it to good use yet, I’m so used to traditional vibes, I haven’t played with/experimented with it enough.

My new obsession is with the glass and wooden toys. Haven’t saved enough $$ to buy one yet, but just looking at them makes me wet :-)

  • I have adored my Gigi from the moment i opened her box; orgasms are effortless and varied, and she is a beautiful piece of kit as a bonus.

Disagree with you on the cone tho’ .. Yes, she was pricey, and i don’t use her for quick wanking, but for couple play, for when i want to be face-down, bottom-up, hands-free, for emulating the best faux-oral i have ever had from a toy, and for the slow built-up orgasm that blows my head she WORKS.

  • He likes her for anal stimulation, and to press his balls against. When tied spreadeagled, i have teased him with her buzzing between his thighs. Best of all, i use her for clit stimulation when he is behind me and in my bottom – because she is solid and unmoveable on the bed/floor i can wriggle and arch backwards to my heart’s content, and have hands free to do other *stuff* :)

  • I love my Gigi too…and my Hitachi stays plugged in and tucked under my pillow! I was curious about the cone but hadn’t got around to reading any reviews. May have to look in to it closer for face-down position Carnalis mentions.

  • I took your advice awhile ago and got a Hitachi. It’s the BEST advice I ever took! I adore it.

I’ll be checking out the Gigi but in the meantime, I’m really loving the Freestyle vibe. You’ve got endless possibilities with your iPod playlists. Divine!

Hmmm I have a Gigi and was *so* excited to get it, and I have to say it’s fallen a bit short of expectations. It’s good for clitoral stimulation, keeps a charge for a long time, is quiet and elegant (and small enough for nice anal stim, too) but…I find the control button very hard to use and it just doesn’t do much for me g-spot wise. Maybe I just haven’t experimented enough?

    • aag

You know, I’d have to agree that the control button could be better. I’ve had that problem with all the wand-type Lelo vibes. The button is just too easy to push accidentally when you’re doing it. :)

      • zoe

There is definitely a learning curve in holding the Gigi so you don’t hit the control button at the wrong time, but sooo worth it to learn. And I’m not entirely sure where else you’d put the button that would be better and still convenient.

  • Great post AAG… Thanks for this series. I can’t wait for the “male oriented” toys…. :-)
