So very many things about this case fill me with a sick, trembly rage, but perhaps nothing more so than an idea running rampant throughout right-wing media which suggests that support for Roman Polanski is based on “godless liberalism.”
You won’t see this more-or-less godless more-or-less liberal wishing for any special treatment for the man. In fact I’m quite aghast at the justifications I’ve heard over the past few days:
It happened so long ago that we should let bygones be bygones. Are you fucking kidding me? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
Even the victim now forgives him. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
The case was bungled. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
The victim’s mother should never have put her child in that position. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
The tragedies in his personal life explain why he did it. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
The tragedies in his personal life have been punishment enough. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
Culture encourages us to lust after underage girls. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
It wasn’t rape-rape. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
It might have been consensual. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
He’s an old man now. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
I love his movies. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
He already served some time. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
He never did it again. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
It won’t help the victim if she has to dredge up the memories. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
The victim was paid off. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
There are more important people to prosecute. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
He’s a brilliant artist. AYFKM? It doesn’t matter. He raped a 13-year-old child.
To Roman Polanski’s supporters–Hollywood, godless, liberal or otherwise: Are you fucking kidding me? Nothing matters but the fact that he raped a 13-year-old child. Get your priorities straight. Advocate only for the fair, unbiased treatment of this brilliant yet criminally flawed man.
Doing anything but that is to perpetuate the kind of culture which suggests that it’s perfectly reasonable to rape 13-year-old children.
