New

Apr 282009

After many months employing a lovely theme, finally I grew weary of the blue.  I’ve made about a billion mistakes over the past day but finally something serviceable seems to be up.

You’ll notice that we now have nested comments (nested comments!), so feel free to try them out below.

I’m continuing to iron out issues; if you find anything odd, please let me know and I’ll do my best to fix it.  Bear in mind that my knowledge of CSS, HTML and any other code-related combinations of letters is very limited, so leave your suggestions in very small words.

Please do be blunt.  Er…constructively blunt.  You’re not going to hurt my feelings.

  1. Nice!
I like it quite a lot.

  2. It makes me imagine you as more of a housewife who would put floral-patterned wallpaper in a line around the middle of her children’s rooms than I believe you to be. (You don’t do that, do you?)

That is as constructively blunt as I can be tonight. Regardless, this might just be because I don’t personally like yellow. Nested comments are awesome though. And, your new quote is excellent, as usual.

  3. I love it! It was a bit of a surprise to click and see the change, but I enjoy it. Keep up the good work, aag.

  4. I like it! It’s fresh and warm and springy. :)

  5. This is a test comment.

  6. This is another test comment. Y’all are so patient.

    • Ooh, baby, I want to nest my comments in your comments. It would be like…like a metaphor, nestled in a badly-constructed sentence!

But we could have social intercourse. Together. With people watching! For milliseconds on end!

(sorry, just an attempt to test nested comments actually)

  7. It’s really lovely! I would tone down the yellow a bit to make the text easier to read (It might just be my screen though, hard to say). You could also make the sidebar with navigation (The left one) a different color so it stood out from the posts. That’s just my perspective as a designer though.

    I especially like the flowers.

  8. I really like the new layout and I’ve loved your blog for years now! Always keeps me coming back for more. :)

  9. i like it, AAG. very clean and well-organised. brava!

  10. Whew! Can ya make the ad column a bit larger and the blog space smaller, please? : (
Like the apple blossoms, can take or leave the yellow/buff.

  11. I find that the stuff on the sides come to close to the actual blog. So it’s just a jumble of words/images to the eye. I really liked the way your headers looked in the old style. However a change is always nice and understandable.

  12. Sorry to inform you of this. I feel as if I am in a commercial website. The old design was a bit more subtle. Your content has to go up proportionally to all of this “clutter”.

  13. At the moment it looks a bit ‘busy’ but I expect that I’ll get used to it :o)

  14. I like the color and the photograph.
I don’t like the buttons at the top I think I would have made them into buttons and put them in a line under the tile and the tag line.
But I come here for the words and they are always perfect.
Please don’t alter anything if it will distract you from your: writing, kids or sex life.

  15. I don’t know why people are complaining about the ads. They are just the same as they were. Not only that, I don’t really know why people care so much if there are a bunch of ads in the sidebar. I come here to read what you have to say, and I would assume that 99% of your other readers do as well. I just ignore the ads and read the words (I also read this through a reader, so I don’t have to see the layout unless I click to comment, so…)

Either way, I like it a lot. I love the new header image and it feels really fresh. :)

  16. I like it! The color scheme is nice and the text is easy to read. Nothing worse that great writing that is difficult to read, which certainly isn’t the case here!

  17. Yow!
    The yellow is a bit…ummm…harsh.
I have to say I preferred the blue.

When I click on the scroll bar in the comments screen.
there is a 2.5 second delay before the content scrolls.
    That’s a serious usability problem.
The scroll bar on the main page doesn’t have this delay.

The bigger text entry box for comments is nice.

  18. At first I thought I clicked the wrong link to get here. The yellow looks, well, dull, to me. No, neutral. Doesn’t distract from the text at all.

But it would be nice to have a little padding between the sidebars and the posts. They’re just a bit close for me. Also, I now have to read in a smaller window, because the site resizes to the full length of the window. That makes the text hard to read in that long of a line on the screen.

Small things that really will make no difference to my visiting here (and coming from someone who uses a free template). Keep it up.

  19. I like the yellow and as always, the photography. The fact that the posting is in the middle of “business” makes it seem as if the actual blogging is not as important. Maybe narrower sidebars?

  20. I like it, it’s soothing on the eyes. For instance, if I go to a blog that is black, I won’t even read it because it messes with my eyes so much. This is nice, reminds me of a happy kitchen. Is that weird?

And, I love the quote in the banner. One of my other favorites by Camus-”You are forgiven for your happiness and success only if you consent to share them”. Which, of course, you do :)

  21. Lovely!

I have to say, though, that I’d read no matter what the site looked like.

Actually I’m lying, I would not read if you used the -blink- tag or, like, green text on purple background.

I think the contrast between what this site looks like and the (occasionally naughty) content is kind of cool. A quick glance would not make me think this was a sexy blog. Which is a good thing!

  22. Awesome revamp!!!!! It really is lovely. If ever you tire of writing about things that go slurp in the night, I think that you could make a fine living as a web page designer.

BTW, I don’t know how you do what you do and still tweet so much! I am worn out just trying to follow.

There IS only one of you right?

    You rock!

    • You are too kind. Check the link at the very bottom of the page; this is a premade template that comes with some 200 options for personalization. If I designed my own page it would be upside down, backwards and filled with blinky graphics.

      :)

  23. Looks great! Love the new header photo.

  24. It looks nakkie! And not in a good way, to my eyes. I did enjoy the blue, and the text seemed…less blocky before? Hrmmm. I suppose change is inevitable, though.

Bearing in mind, however, I’d still read even if you suddenly went mad and started festooning recounts of your escapades with pimped out glitter graphixx (the extra x is for extreme), ala myspace.

  25. well, if you happen to need any help
    i happen to be a developer :P
and i am very familiar with wordpress :)

so, your wish, is my command !

i would always come here for the words .. but i don’t prefer the new theme :P
if you want theme suggestions.. let me know

  26. This is really nice, coloful but not distracting. Nice job!

  27. I think I’m with the people who say it’s a tad busy now and your words don’t look as important on the page as they did before. I’m thinking maybe it’s because now with the lighter background (which I like, it’s springy!) the ads are a larger contrast so they pop out more? Just a guess…

It certainly won’t drive me away from reading you, and it does look more professional I think, but the ads are certainly more distracting.

  28. the sight is beautiful!!! great job!

  29. lol i so meant site

  30. Alas, the changes seem to have rendered your site unreadable on my Blackberry.
    [sigh]

  31. i can’t read it on my phone either…oh well. i’ll be as blunt as possible, but the blue was soothing and easier to read. now, the ads pop out too much and i probably won’t make reading your site my top ten daily reads anymore.

  32. I don’t like blogs with this layout, for the very reason that I find the middle column of text looks too small in comparison to whatever is on the sidebars–ads or blogrolling–and I get distracted while trying to read. It’s MUCH harder for me to focus on your words, which is a shame, because that’s what I like the most. The color doesn’t wow me but I think I’d come to like it over time, but the text layout really, really bothers me because I’m having difficulty reading. :(

Good for you for shaking things up though–change is good.

  33. Uh, you changed it in the 8 hours since I last visited and I like it a lot more. Yay! Also: Do you sleep?

  34. Its a beautiful site darlin, but its playing havoc with my blackberry :(. Your blog gives me such great reading material during the day away from my computer. Hopefully you will find a solution soon.

    • It would be very helpful if y’all would let me know EXACTLY HOW the site is screwing up on phones.

Details? Examples? Please be specific. :)

      Thank you!

  35. I think the improvements work too! Your words look more important on the page than they did before. Sorry I have no insight in to the Blackberry problem though.

  36. Just noticed the change, have been using my Reader – nice!

The buff/bisque still leaves me blah, and doesn’t do the apple blossoms justice.

Altho’, when I + size the page, I don’t lose the right column off the page, the left column gets smaller and distorted. Oh, well.
